What do y’all think the hardest fishing fish is pound for pound? Photo of a pacific Jack (Toro) from last week. I’d wager to say Bonefish..

bluegill. it may not even weigh a pound, but man can they fight for their size if we’re talkin pound for pound

Of course there’s all the salt water fish which can’t be matched, but I always found big pike and carp to fight like literal tanks

  3. Whatever that boxfish/cowfish thing was that I caught in Belize. Like hauling in an angry cinder block.

Other guy said it, small mouth bass. Not to be confused with large mouth bass, the king of the dramatic strike and instant give up. Small mouths will brawl the entire time and I’m always shocked at the size to fight ratio when I bring them in.

  5. corbina in the surf, pretty hard fighting fish lb for lb, a 5lb corbina fights harder than any other 5lb fish from the surf…

  6. Well if you scaled a bonefish down to about 1.5lbs (a decently large bluegill), I would put my money on the bonefish every day of the week. I have seen them caught and its really not a context which one is stronger. And a 5lb bonwfish being the same size a smallies, but it can swim 35mph and pull 100 yards of backing, to then run 50 yards back towards you, to then run another 50 out, id put my money on bonefish for being stronger.

But If you took a tuna and scaled it down to a bonefish, my money would be on the tuna.

I know typically when we talk about this we tend to imagine the tiny things being stronger pound for pound, but ive seen a tuna that was about 15-20lbs caught from a jetty and landed on the beach. When it got to the beach, it slammed its tail in the sand for like 5 minutes. I know it doesnt sound like much, but just watching a fish slam its tail into the sand that hard, for that long was unbelievable. There is no 15lb fish on earth i have seen come close to that level of strength and endurance after a long fight. It was literally throwing sand into the air and cutting into the sand with its tail. Ive seen videos of small marlin doing the same. If you made one of those thing 2 lbs, they would be the strongest fighting 2lb fish i am convinced. Nothing under 100lbs was as strong as that 15-20lb tuna.

  7. Nobody ever asks, what’s the most overrated, weakest fighting fish pound for pound? I’d love to see the hurt feelings in that discussion.

Bluegill! Those little guys can put up a heck of a fight! Love to catch them, but it’s been many years! They are fun!!

  9. My bet is on merganser. They’ll haul ass, dive and then jump higher than anything else. And they refuse to come down.
