Found this TFO NXT Black Label 8wt rod and NTR III reel on deep discount. Could these work for lighter saltwater duty if paired with a quality line? Only hesitation is the rod is a moderate action rather than fast and I don’t think the NTR is sealed, but I’d clean it thoroughly after each outing anyways.

I’m usually chasing trout in the mountains on a 2wt or 4wt so saltwater is foreign to me. I make the occasional trip down to the gulf coast with family and want to build a simple setup to take with me and try out fishing the surf and flats.

I started fly fishing the surf with a similar sized rod, 9’ 9/10 weight. The rod size is fine, but I’m building an 11’ switch. My regret is I didn’t size my line properly, sinking lines are a new ballgame, and if you can I’d recommend stopping into a shop where they fish the surf and based on grain weight rating of your rod and action they’ll help with the size. But probably 330 grain would be good.

I also don’t use a sealed drag system reel, I spray the internals with Corrosion-X once in a while and rinse it out after each time. Just keep an eye on it and don’t set it down in the sand. Maintenance will keep it going until you decide you love the surf enough to buy a dedicated reel.

  2. Yes it’ll work. Just buy a good intermediate line. Don’t cheap out on that.

  3. Yep. That dog will hunt. Spending on where you are, intermediate to full sink line
