Hello I want to start fishing more top water would this attract bass and other species or is the hook to big also I’ve heard it’s best to throw top water on straight braid but but my rod has mono line would it be ok to throw this lure?

Bass & pike are the main predators to hit top water lures. Toss that near some lily pads & I don’t see why it wouldn’t work.

Hook is a tad bit too big, but for Bass & pike on top waters, they tend to inhale the lures so it should be fine (I tend to use oversize single hooks on top waters as well). Definitely not as big of a deal as using an oversized hook on a finesse rig.

People tend to use very heavy (50lb+) straight braid on their topwaters for two main reasons: 1) adding a fluorocarbon leader adds a weak point with another knot from braid to fluoro for limited gain (topwater is not finesse, fish will very likely not notice braid at all), and 2) braid tends to cut through weeds (and my fingertips) better than mono or fluoro as it’s “rougher” and the braid acts like a saw blade against vegetation, with 4-strand braid cutting a bit better compared to 8-strand.

You can still throw topwaters with monofilament, but if a bass or pike hits your lure then goes to hide in the weeds, you’ll have a horrible time trying to get it out if you’re using light line (<20lbs). Hasn’t stopped me from using them intermittently on light weeds, but I wouldn’t go intentionally hunting through heavy weeds without 40lb+ line.
