Hello everyone, I have recently adopted my first betta and was wondering if I should be concerned about his scales on his head. Oscar is very active and appears to have normal activity based on what I’ve seen online, but I want to make sure this isn’t something that could affect his health. pls ignore the plants/gravel in the last pic, this was before i knew better, I’ve changed his tank since then.

Following because this is happening to my guy too!
This might possibly be hole-in-the-head disease. It’s a parasitic infection caused by a variety of factors, but especially common in commercial fish breeding operations.
To be sure, I would compare your cutie with some images online, and if it matches up, treat with either API General Cure or Fritz Paracleanse. Luckily these medications work very well for this, and won’t harm your buddy at all if you’re incorrect.
If you’re worried about the little holes, double check if they’re symmetrical and give “Betta sensory pits” a google so you can verify if they’re in the same places as the holes on your guy. If so, then that’s probably what it is(sensory pits are normal). If not, look into hole in head disease and see if the photos match what you see on your guy and if symptoms line up with his behavior
Firstly, the first picture looks like a beautiful set up for him! Don’t feel bad about his previous set up either, everyone starts somewhere and artificial plants are 100% a valid option for aquariums so long as they are safe for the fish.
Secondly, I have no proper advice to give as I am new to the hobby too, I just think he’s so beautiful and you should know that!!
Sorry I’m not helpful 😅
