So over the last few years, I’ve made the discovery that in my opinion, the best combination you can create for long lasting performance as well as durability is a high end reel+a lower end rod.
BIG 3
Trout/panfish/everything freshwater- Ugly stick Elite 7’ medium 2 piece, Shimano stradic 2500
Largemouth/smallmouth Bass- Lews TP1X 7’2” Medium Heavy, Shimano metanium MGL B 150HG
Saltwater- Ugly stick tiger 7’ Medium moderate 2 piece (custom wrapped), Penn Battle 3DX 4000
I came to this conclusion as a teenager, I didn’t have money for expensive reels, but summer jobs could always get me around a 150-200$ setup. This always left much to be desired in the reel department, but the rods were fine!
More expensive reels are a necessity for longevity in my opinion. They are mechanical and at least need the ability to be opened up and serviced. This is crucial!
Further solidified as I got older, friends of mine purchased higher end rods. They almost always broke, while my 100$ and cheaper rods seemed to be workhorses! My original TP1 and Shimano casitas are still kicking from 2016! Couldn’t ask for more from an under 250$ combo!
I’m excited to hear your thoughts! I don’t find myself wishing I had lighter rods, and obviously my reels are just fine with regular maintenance. Thanks for reading!
