What is the difference between these reels to cause such a price jump? Would it be better just to invest into mgl reels for the cast distance and work through the steeper learning curve or get a dc and mgl one to learn easier with and one to cast farther?

Depends on your application. The Bantam is an absolute workhorse for bass fishing. I use them for deep water jigging on jigs 1/2 oz and up and top water stuff 1/2 Oz and up. They palm a little better and have a lot of newwer shimano tech. I wouldn’t hesitate to use a Bantam for 1/2oz and up moving baits.

The Curados are still great reels that can offer higher line capacity and have a solid reputation with a proven track record.

You can get a JDM Bantam shipped (with tariffs) for the mid $200’s from Digitaka.

Edit – your rod and line combo matters more for casting distance than the reel.
