This an entire box of 8lb braid. Clearly not enough, right? What did I do wrong? This is 125 yards

  1. Put mono backing on there, like a third of the way. On the reel or spool you’ll see some numbers that tell you what weight and how much line fits on there

Add a few rotations of mono backing or some electrical tape. What size is the reel? It says how much per diameter on it

  3. What size is your reel? You’re likely going to have to unspool CAREFULLY and add mono backing then respool after connecting the two lines.

Not nearly enough. 8lb braid is very thin, so it takes a ton of line to fill up the spool. Best bet is to put mono backing under it like others have said.

In order to ensure the exact correct amount of backing, you can tie the mono to your braid as-is and fill it till your spool is full. Then go out to a field or something and walk all the line off your reel in a straight line and cut it from the spool. Walk back to the mono end and tie that directly to your spool, then wind the line on under tension. You’ll have a perfectly full spool with the 8lb braid on top of the mono backing.

Braid is much thinner than mono. Thats why people use a mono backer. The good news is that you are on the right track to set your backing up perfectly.

Tie a 10lb or 12lb mono to the end of your braid and reel that onto your reel over the braid. Stop when it is exactly full. Then go to a local par or football field and walk all that line off the reel, tie onto the mono end and reel it all back on. You only have to do this once, the backing is permanent.
