I want to get a trolling motor for my yak and I’m not sure how to go about it.

I see online others put their motor on the back transom, but since I have a pdl drive I dont want to take everything off that makes it a pdl drive (if that makes any sense. Rudder, etc)

I know the cheaper motors out there are the clamp options which I’m totally fine with being it my first motor, but there is nowhere to clamp it to.

They sell Motor Mounts online for clamp styles and it almost looks like they fit where my (anchor mount) would go so I’m not sure at all. And if it did go there wouldn’t it hit the rudder? And want to veer to the left/right?

Hopefully this makes sense I’m just not sure how to go forward. I know they sell bow trolling motors but I’m not sure how I would feel about something up front and having to lean forward to steer.

  1. Yes, you can. I have a trolling motor mounted to a diy mount on the right left side of the stern using the anchor mount screws and it works great, the built in rudder still works great for steering too, just make sure the motor cannot hit the rudder when you mount it.

Edit: For clarity, I too have the PDL 106, it’s an amazing yak and even better with the trolling motor & pedals as an option.

For what it’s worth..since putting an Xi3 on my bow..I don’t even bring the PDL drive with me anymore. It’s controlled with a remote. You have to lean forward to deploy and retract it buts there’s ways to do that from your seat with a little work
