Hex was gifted to me last year by a close friend. We heard about a superstition that when someone gifts you a fish, you will become pregnant (since I struggle with infertility). Everything has seemed fine up until today when I went to check on him. He was floating on his side at the bottom of the tank and it seemed like he was convulsing. I checked the water parameters and they were fine as they always are. I do 20% water changes every weekend. He lives in a 10 gallon planted tank with 4 other shrimp and a nerite snail. I did notice that he didn’t want to eat this morning but that was the only thing out of the ordinary. Has anyone experienced something like this? Rip buddy ):

First, I’m very sorry for the loss of your sweet Hex. Unfortunately, bettas these days are riddled with genetic abnormalities and highly susceptible to illness and disease, due to overbreeding and poor genetics. You could be the perfect betta owner and still lose them quickly. In the first picture it appears Hex was pineconing, which is often a symptom of dropsy, which is organ failure. There’s likely nothing you did wrong if the water parameters were good. Could have been any number of illnesses that are either hard/impossible to treat. Hex lived a great life 🫶🏻
