I've never used or owned a baitcaster, partly because I like my spinning reel, think I'll have a hard time, and cause I'm broke. however my buddy keeps recommending me the Shimano Cardiff because my set up is a little dated.

he loves Shimano and I love them too but i only ever used one of their rods, I'm more familiar with their MTB gear.

why would I get that style of reel opposed to this style tho? it seems a lot more popular.

the cardiff is a 400 sized round reel. that is massive. the slx is a standard size low profile reel. 150 i’m pretty sure. look at the weight difference. the slx will be about 7oz the cardiff well over 10oz

Depends on what lures/weight you will be throwing, what you’re fishing for and what rod you put the baitcaster onto. Low profile baitcasters like that slx are more for freshwater, lighter baits. And the Cardiff is more for heavier baits, bigger fish, more powerful rods

  3. Both are solid reels. For catfish the Cardiff is likely the better tool, but the difference is the line capacity and braking systems and the SLX is much more modern obviously. Guess it depends how you fish. The SLX would be a better bass reel imo. I use bait runner spinning reels for catfish personally. I have a 201 Cardiff and it’s nice but I have it on an old school eagle claw for a bit bigger baits. Now the Shimano Calcutta Conquest line… sexy.
