New to fishing in adulthood. Used to do it as a kid in the Adirondacks and I’d catch sunfish all day. I live in WNC now and mainly try fishing at a local lake that is stocked. Have also tried some local rivers, and in the few times I’ve gone in the past year I’ve only had one single bite, which was today and it was a rainbow that I watched breach the water and right off my hook 😆 Looked beautiful while doing it though!

Pictured is my beginner setup.

•2/0 hook (Ozark)

•3/16 oz weight

•Yum Dinger bait

The lake I fish is known for having bass, crappie and carp. The rivers around here usually have a lot of rainbow trout. What am I doing wrong? Thanks in advance and I hope y’all have a great weekend!

  1. what style of fishing are you doing? Bait and Wait? Typically if I bait and wait, i use circle hooks

  2. A 2/0 hook is pretty big for trout. They have relatively small mouths. Try a size 4 or 6. Good luck and enjoy the journey

  3. So when it comes to stocked trout, they will also aggressively hit lures. I’d fish one rod with trout magnet bait (minnows and worms also work) and also cast another rod with a small crank (floating rapala), spinner, or spoon. Just secure the bait rod or it can end up in the water.

I particularly like panther martins, and blue Fox vibrax. Smaller sizes (1/4 oz or less)

May end up with a little chaos if you get 2 bites at once, but that part of the fun.
