Bought this reel off Facebook market place for a good deal (daiwa bg 5000) and it just didnt feel smooth. Not nearly as smooth as a reel Ive had for a decade that had never been cleaned. So i decided to buy some grease and oil to see if I could get it to come around.

Now Ive never done this b4, nor have I ever opened up a reel b4. But to me this just seems like too much grease. Could this be the cause of my issue?

  1. Comfyadventure on

In my personal experience of self servicing reels, spinning reel in particular will always feel a bit more “sticky” when you re grease it. It will loosen up after a while but never quite go back to factory feel imo. I don’t have such experience with casting reels so maybe the way the gear lines up in spinning reel exacerbate any extra resistance from grease more.

Just degrease an regrease the reel and use it for a while to see how it feels. You already opened it up so might as well.

  2. Heavy grease like the one in your reel will make it feel a little stickier. If you want a freer spin you can remove it and use lighter grease. I use quantum hot sauce and it works great.

  3. No. That’s the old grease? Looks very dirty, maybe clump up with dirt and whatnot. What you need to do, is take it out, wipe it off, use a toothbrush, try to remove as much gunk as possible.

And for adding new grease, the more the merrier. Yes of course we don’t go overboard where it leaks out, but too much grease isn’t really a thing (not talking bout exaggeration amount).

Often when it feels not smooth (but not jammed or anything else), it is because one of the part is clumped up with gunk or rusted. Find that part, clean it.
