I’ve seen some bettas with huge fins and some with tiny fins. Will this one get any bigger? Just got today. Is it a male or female?
Name advice? All my tanks have different themes. This one is pirate themed. Can’t think of a pirate or mermaid/fae themed name help plz.
Will be getting live plants soon

The amonia strips are separate. It’s 1 strip with 7 things I think and the other has one
Honestly depends on your fish, but from what I’ve seen – fins don’t get exactly bigger, rather they form a more distinct shape/form/color. And it’s a male
The pink plant is fine, it looks like a silk plant. Whether or not bright colors stress fish out depends on if anybody’s ever actually done a study on this imo- bettas are not overly skittish fish and while they would benefit from a shaded, natural aquarium I don’t think you need to immediately replace everything here. Colorful gravel and decor does not inherently “leach toxic paint” into the tank, at least not if you bought it from a reputable brand/store. I think this myth stems from genuine concern that new fishkeepers might use unsafe materials, but it does not apply to silk plants made for an aquarium. They’re fine. To answer your actual question, he’s a veiltail so his fins may get a little longer but won’t spread out wide like a halfmoon or other tail types.
Hes a male veiltail. Its possible his back fin will grow a bit as it looks like it may have been damaged a little at the store so that can grow back. Otherwise they will stay relatively the same, but he is sure to get much brighter colouring with an owner who clearly cares for him
If they’re healthy and happy you will definitely see some growth and more than likely some color changes too (in my experience after getting my bettas home from the store and settling in they start growing and and changing colors the happier they become, they look kinda “dusty” when they’re fresh from the store 😔🥺)
Some quick tips:
• tank 5 gallons or more
• tank heater appropriate to tank size
• low water flow for bettas (slow flowy fish)
• lights on no more than 8 hours, and off at night (too much light can be stressful for your pet and can cause serious algae problems)
• lid on tank (bettas like to escape sometimes)
• try some live plants like (Anacharis, Anubias, Java Fern, Christmas Moss, Java Moss, water lettuce, Frogbit, Amazon swords, pearl weed, and or Water Hyacinth 🪻)
• look into “the walstad method” it can be fun for Bettas! I love doing it with nanoscapes ; shrimps and bettas mostly 🤘💯🤘💯✌️Sorry for the long comment!
Happy Autism Acceptance Month 2026!
They usually fill out more in my experience, sometimes they do get a bit longer and fluffier. Here’s one of my fish(when I first got him vs now) They are definitely fuller.

ime they will get longer and fuller depending on the tail type of the fish. here’s mine, he’s a veiltail like yours. when i got him, his fins were pretty similar to yours and a lot shorter.

i like your tank! i used fake plants for years but now have live ones. they’re a pain in the butt sometimes though so i don’t really think they’re a requirement. especially since there are some really nice fake plants out there, looks like you chose well! i’d just add more, they really like it cosy.
Here’s the update
