Good morning!
This is an update to my post a few days ago. Since then I have:
– Bought a liquid testing kit (Results below.)
– Added more plants, and a new driftwood
– Performed a water change (Bought a new tube thing and buckets to make it easier! It's amazing.)
– Made a baffle with a spare intake sponge (In preparation for floating plants.)
I still need to:
– Add shrimp for enrichment
– Buy the floating plants (However I get a lot of condensation under the tank lid, so I'm afraid they won't last)
I had tested the water the same day as my first post, the next morning after adding the plants, and this morning after the water change yesterday. The water was darker from the tannins, but the water change lightened it a bit. (I know it's preferred to just post the numbers, but I added the photo because I am unsure if im reading the colors right)
pH: 6.8 (This is the result I'm most unsure of. It was about this same color all times I tested, maybe sightly darker on the second test.)
Ammonia: 0ppm (All three tests.)
Nitrites: .25ppm (All three tests, although it might've been slightly darker on the second test.)
Nitrates: 0ppm (All three tests.)
He is eating normally, and still floats around the top. But I think he is okay. He hides around the tank, and approaches the top when I go to feed him. He was very curious about the water change tube, and swam up to investigate.
Question: When I added the baffle, filter stopped adding bubbles to the tank. Do I have to be worried about oxygen in the water?
Misc: yesterday morning there was a lot of foam at the top of the tank. Uneven sized bubbles. They are gone after the water change though.
Thank you.

Hi! Im not an expert but I think nitrites should be lower than that. Nitrites enter the fish’s bloodstream and bind to hemoglobin, converting it into methemoglobin, which can’t carry oxygen. The result is that the fish suffocates even if the water is well oxygenated .Try whit a 30% water change. That shoud help.
Foam at the surface is probably a bubble nest. Bettas do that.
Add a bacteria in a bottle product. I recommend Fritzyme 7.
Your water is pretty acidic. I would recommend dropping in a small chunk of 100% cuttlebone somewhere you can’t see to naturally raise the PH. also, that bright gravel stresses fish out just FYI
Nitrites should be zero. It means that your tank isn’t properly cycled and you’ll have to do,a fish in cycle – you can look up how to do that but basically it involves water changes until everything balances. Edit: your PH is fine, bettas like acidic water.
nitrites, nitrates and ammonia should be 0 preferably
The high nitrite is why you fish waste acting strange, this is litterly poison to them

As a heads up, I would suggest not getting shrimp for a while. They need established tanks and do best in older planted tanks.
you might want to look into that spongebob pineapple, not sure if it’s the same one but a while back a very popular line of spongebob decor was leeching nasty stuff into tanks.
