Tight lines, everyone!
I recently got back from a trip to the coast of Oman and wanted to share a few impressions and technical details. For fly fishers, Oman is absolutely insane, but you have to be prepared for extremely varied conditions. Generally, everything is fished from a boat. Shore fishing is apparently possible, but we didn't try it.
- The Coast (Sight Fishing)
The absolute highlight is the African Permit. Anyone who has fished for Permit before knows: it's a war of nerves. We spotted them in turquoise water, had to cast in heavy surf and with the boat pitching badly. Not always easy… Setup: 10-weight rod (needed for the power of these swimming muscle-packages). Fly patterns: heavily weighted mussel imitations (Black Mussel) and small crayfish patterns. Epic bycatch: Two-bar Seabream often run alongside the Permit. When you see those orange fins, your pulse spikes — even if it's "just" bycatch. The takes from both species are usually anything but gentle.
- Offshore (The Heavy Artillery)
We headed out in the mornings at less-than-ideal water levels and tried our luck for Sailfish or Mahi-mahi until we had good tide.
Sailfish: Definitely not "the gentlemanly approach," but a 2.2m fish on the fly is an experience in itself. The take on the popper and the subsequent jumps were pure violence. Equipment: The Sage R8 Core (12wt) paired with the Sage Enforcer reel. Without a high-end drag and plenty of backing, you don't stand a chance. Variety: Alongside Sailfish there were Mahi-mahi (Dorado) and small Tunas to be caught.
Oman offers a wild mix of technical sight fishing and big fish in open water. The conditions — saltwater, powerful fish, jagged rocks — are the ultimate stress test for your gear. If any of you are thinking about going: pack plenty of abrasion-resistant tippet material — the rock edges are merciless. Have any of you had Oman on your radar, or has anyone been?
