First tank, first aquascape, first betta… how did I do? 👀
6.4g shallow rimless that I set up from scratch. Running Fluval Bio-Stratum with a simple dragon stone layout and trying to keep it clean/minimal instead of overloading it.
Plants:
– Dwarf hairgrass (hoping for a carpet 🤞)
– Amazon sword
– Java fern (finally learned not to bury it…)
– Redroot & Salvinia Minima floaters (for hiding)
Tank is still young (~3 weeks), so I’m dealing with the usual melt + biofilm phase, but starting to see new growth.
Stocking:
– 1 plakat betta (already has a personality… and apparently a shrimp body count 😅)
– 1 nerite snail
Learned a TON already:
– Flow matters way more than I expected for bettas
– Floaters are both awesome and chaos at the same time
Goal is a clean, low-tech tank with a full hairgrass carpet and a happy betta.
Would love honest feedback—what would you change or improve as this grows in?
Fish is female, but haven't decided on a name yet.

Lid ASAP! She can and will jump out of the tank! I would add some denser plants for her to hide in and add some tannins to the water, they get stressed if the light is too bright. It looks like your flow still might be too harsh for her. They need very little flow. Are you monitoring your water parameters and treating this as a fish-in cycle with the proper supplies?
