Hello everyone – I've been fishing all my life and have been talking about fly fishing for some time. My fishing buddy gave me this box of flies as a nudge for me to shut up and actually try it out.

I know the whole nymph, emerger and dry fly categories, but are these 'good' for freshwater trout? Can one even determine that?

Primarily streams and lakes, all freshwater.

I hope my question makes sense. Thanks!

Good, no, not really. Will they catch fish? Maybe/probably. The most effective ones are probably left side 3 rows from bottom, and copper flies bottom right both for nymphing. The dark nymphs 2nd from top on the right might work but they’re pretty thicccc. Usually with flies less is more.

Just buy a couple of woolly buggers and start with those.

Not the most experienced fly fisher ever. The ones on the bottom right (right side), are some kind of pheasant tail and should be good just about anywhere. If I saw trout rising I’d try any of those dry flies. If one doesn’t work after a while just try one that looks different, but you don’t have much variety.

Other than that, I have no clue what is in that box.

  3. Your friend gave you a bunch of junk flies. I also give away flies I’ll never use to my friends haha.
