Idk if this type of post is allowed but I need to know what my childhood fish was!! I remember it being long and vaguely eel shaped, and the main thing I remember is that it swam backwards. That’s why I chose it, idk if the species swims like this or if it was an abnormality. It was black & white (I may have hallucinated the white parts I’m not sure). It died because I perfumed the tank because I thought it smelled bad (I was 9 😭). I hope you can help me.

If you’re looking to get another one, do a lot of research beforehand. They get up to 18 inches fully grown and I’ve heard they are very difficult to care for.

I’m glad to see you’ve IDed your fish, and I want to say that I absolutely adore your drawing. I would have a magnet of this.

  3. If you were wanting to get another eel-type fish but don’t have at least 100 gallons to keep the ghost knife fish in, kuhli loaches are a good option 🙂

  4. That’s a really excellent drawing of a black ghost knifefish for someone who hasn’t seen one since they were 9! Please draw more fish you don’t remember very well.

Your drawing is very cute and, as it turns out – pretty damn accurate, since fish was id’d so quickly ☺️😁

its a black ghost knife fish but be warned if you want to get another that they need pretty big tanks bc their adult size can be almost 2 feet long !

  7. Really good picture tho knew right away. Good luck in your endeavors to owning one again

Omg I love these guys, they are so cool. When I had one I could hand feed him and he would rub up on my fingers (they are so smooth!!!)

  11. Omg I’m so quirky and neurodivergent because I recognized this fish😊🤪🥴

  12. Yo if you want to keep one from the same family id recommend the brown ghost knifefish (apteronotus macrostomus) it looks the same but is brown and has a longer snout and gets less big around 12 inches so would need a 55 gallon tank, with sand, plants, multiple caves and a good filter! They are pretty cool fish, and mostly eat live food but pellet training can be done but i wouldn‘t use it as primary food.
