So I’m planning an offshore trip with a friend who has no rod, just a spool (like the one in the pic).
I’ve been doing jigging in the area we’re going to and it’s always been rewarding. My question is whether it’s possible to do jigging using his spool, or it just won’t work?
I get that it would be a hassle releasing and retrieving the line, but has anyone tried that?
Details: Depth in the area isn’t significant (10-15 meters max). Current is either weak or medium. I usually use 20g-40g jigs.
Appreciate your answers 🫡🎣

Yeah of course you can.
Jeremy wade did it with a leaf as a lure and a rock.
You can use a jig with a hand line but at only 20-40 grams you might find it difficult to feel what’s going on with the jig.
Generally hand lines are heavier line so that it’s less likely to cut you when you are fighting something.
Your friend might find it easier to use a sinker and bait off the hand line.
Go to Miami, 50% of fisherman on the rocks use Cuban Hand Lines
I do it all the time but if you have a spare rod id bring it just in case
Yes, hand lining is a thing.
Certain techniques are just not worth trying with a hand line. I happily hand line ice jigs, where “jigging” is just a little jiggle and a 4 inch hop is an aggressive maneuver.
Speed jigging deep ocean is something I don’t think I’m physically capable of doing, and even if you could pull in line fast enough, the repeated drops and physical stress, on top of the trip and tangle hazard of the long length of line piling at your feet, make it unfun and problematic.
I find hand lining works best with trolling, or still fishing bait (either under a float or with a sinker on the bottom for me, but a suspended drift would work too.
Absolutely. In fact I have a friend who sails and trolls within from his boat. He’s caught nice kings and mahi like that
For sure you could.
