Just went fishing in the mountains for the first time ever. Took a spinner setup with me, however after whole day, didnt catch anything.
Is this a skill issue or the river is just too shallow (and fast at some places) ?

Most rivers(trout) the appetite is flies or egg roe. I don’t have much experience with it as I’m based out of south Florida but the the few times I went I managed to catch a few trout drifting back yellow canned corn. They see this as fish eggs. Hopefully someone in your area chimes in or has more experience can point you in right direction

Def not too shallow, whether there are fish in there is another question. Ask locals for sure, a tackle shop as someone suggested is a good start. You’d be surprised how well a still fish can blend into shallow, moving water.

No, just throw some trout lures/bait and you’ll be surprised. Use 2-4lb fluoro line

This is a skill issue. Trout fishing in a stream like this needs to be approached like a stealth special forces operation. You cannot let your face or shadow be seen by the water. If you can see in the water, the trout can see you. If they see you, they will not bite. If using a spinner, you need to be upstream fishing downstream. Cast your spinner as far as possible downstream and slowly work it upstream using the current and the tip of your rod to guide it into the backwaters behind big rocks in the stream. Stay low to the ground where the water looks like a mirror to you. Use a tiny spinner, like a 1/32 oz. Black and Gold Panther Martin. Use no more than 4 lb test clear line.
This is the most fun form of fishing. I call it combat trout fishing.
