Inherited 2 fish and some snails in a 2.5g tank from mother in law. Filter wouldn’t work so went to buy a new one and ended up just buying a 10g tank re used all of there decorations with the 2 moss balls and 1 live plant. I added the taller live plant and beta. Beta seems pretty laid back. Also had some snail but I think most are dead, should I get a few more for algae? Also the long rope one usually hides but every now and then he goes crazy up and down the side of the wall I figured he’s stressed so I bought some stress relief liquid? Hope that helps. Also the other small fish seems to be fine with the beta unless I just fed them then the beta will flare at him while he’s looking for food other than that they are fine. I’m assuming the smaller fish probably does better in a small school? Just need advice on if I should change the substrate, add more plants, take away the heater? Add snails ? Another bottoms feeder? What foods and how often? What other fish could I add that would be beneficial, do pools for a living so I feel pretty confident I could get down the testing of this water and maintain proper levels just don’t know if I really need to get in depth too much with this small of a setup and seemingly hardy fish. Any advice or feedback helps wasn’t planning on getting into Aquariums or fish but have a feeling this will be a fun hobby.

  1. As a betta owner my advice would be to: buy something to test the water every now and then and buy something to watch the temp of the water. Bettas are warmer water fish but they shouldn’t go over 80°. Identify the little fish because yes he might be happier with a small school and you need to google what temp they prefer to find a middle ground. The substrate looks fine but my only other concern would be the pink decor. Bettas like to squeeze into places and it might cut him/her up. Just keep an eye on them for now cause it could be fine. Best of luck 🤍

  2. 2nd fish looks like a rope fish. It needs to be removed immediately. Short term, it will jump out of the top of the tank unless you have a VERY secure lid, and long term they get massive far exceeding the size of this tank.

:/ need a 20 gallon long or bigger imho, long boy is lonely. Kuhli loaches like to be in groups, as do those little rasbora fellas.

So you’re running a brand new filter.
You will probably go through the nitrogen cycle. test your water regularly and check for ammonia and nitrite spikes. You can use seachem prime to detoxify it. But weekly water changes at 25% tank volume will be your friend.
You can not let ammonia and nitrite get too high as it will be toxic to the fish and eventually kill them.
Also that light may not be enough for this tank if you plan to keep the plants thriving. Monitor them for any signs that they’re unhappy and upgrade if it happens.

  5. The long rope one is a loach, they are also very social species and thrive better in larger groups (usually 5 minimum), they are also nocturnal so they are usually more active at night/when the lights are off. I would consider surfing marketplace for a larger tank for thr loach and getting him some more friends and using sand for the substrate in the loach tank becuase they love to dig in the sand. I have fine gravel and sand in my tank & my loaches move the decor around a lot just digging around. Loaches love alge wafers and pleco blocks 💜. I started out with 5 loaches and (idk how) they reproduced and now I have 8? Possibly more. I was doing a tank clean and noticed 2 tiny little loaches in the substrate and stopped immediately. Now im playing the waiting game to see how many I actually have once they get a little larger where I can actually see them hahaha.

Hey, so it looks like you got some sort of tetra and some sort of loach, both of which would be much better off in a school and then youre talking about getting a bigger tank. The tetras also may nip the betta’s fins. The easiest route for your setup is to re-home the loach and the tetra and stick with the betta and just get more snails. Your betta will do great in that 10 gallon tank with a heater and youll have a nice easy setup.
