Caught a nice smallie today on the river with the classics Texas worm, for whatever reason the hook came out through the very back of the roof of his mouth. He bled pretty profusely, but the hook removal went ok (if a bit crunchy) and he swam off no problem, but I can’t say I’ve seen a fish bleed that much, and or get hooked that deep and be ok. Any thoughts on how he is or how to prevent it in the future?

If he swam off he’ll be fine
I’ve caught bass with some pretty gnarly war wounds. Bass are pretty tough fish it will be fine
You, sir, are a fish.
most likely, you only really have to worry about the throat or the gills bleeding, sometimes the tongue but those usually look worse than they are
It’s a shame she won’t live…but then again, who does?
bass are pretty tough but that one might have been a good candidate for release into hot oil if they’re in season where you’re at
He’ll probably be fine but if not he’s food for other fish so it all comes around. Set the hook a little earlier and a little lighter to prevent it from happening more often, and if you foul hook another fish if it’s legal size consider keeping it instead of tossing it back
I caught a trout this weekend with a healed ripped gill raker. Fish are tough, but also die if you look at them wrong. Who knows.
I understand fish blood has really efficient hemoglobin or something so they don’t bleed to long
could be wrong tho
