That’s a scud, while they will compete with the shrimp for food most fish will take care of the population for you.

Scud, you “can” keep shrimp with them. However they will compete with shrimp for food.

So you will drastically limit your shrimp colony. Scuds are beneficial to pretty much all tanks with fish. I personally wouldn’t recommend keeping them with shrimp.

Now since you don’t have shrimp yet, you could look into removing them now. Once you have shrimp you won’t be able to eliminate them.

I won’t repeat what others have said, but I will add that they can eat living plants if there isn’t enough food. I used to have a tank full of guppy grass and underfed the tank to try to starve out the scuds. The over the course of a few months my guppy grass went from taking up the majority of space in the tank to a single sad sprig that I saved by moving it into a separate container to propagate.

I still have them in my tanks despite actively trying to get rid of them by tearing down the tank and restarting. Last year I boiled all the substrate and somehow they still came back. Going to try again soon but also treating everything I can’t boil with copper.

There are fish safe medications that will kill off inverts. If you have snails you want to keep, they unalive too though.
