Building new 20 gallon tank for my betta tht currently live in in 5.5 gallon and I don’t have a lid for 20 gallon so I’m planning to live 3-4inched (12cm specifically here) on surface so it doesn’t jump out without a lid on. Is that ok?

Even 1.5-2inch is more than enough provided you aren’t keeping a wild betta. But I guess with your tank size, you can afford to have the water that low provided you aren’t using a hang-on-back filter.

Personally I would put more water in, it’d be easier to keep stable. Also not every betta is a jumper but if youre worried about it you could always put something on top of the tank at night or when you aren’t around it. Im new to the hobby so don’t listen to me but I definitely think you should put more water.

You can get a magnetic mesh lid, they’re cheap and easy to customize and can still use grow lights

  4. Personally I just use plastic egg crate light diffuser. I’ve cut a couple notches out for the filter and light.

Is this a 20 gallon long? You can buy a glass lid at Petco or Petsmart for around $20.
