In the vast majority of videos, social media posts, Reddit threads, etc., I see the words panfish and bluegill interchangeably.
I admittedly have not done much fishing while traveling, are bluegill just that more prominent than other kinds of panfish?

Bluegill can be found in pretty much any body of water, they’re probably the most frequently caught panfish overall, and they’ll readily hybridize woth other sunfish species, so it’s probably due to that.
No, there’s just too many species and hybrids. People just colloquially call them all bluegill or panfish.
Personally, I just call them all bream.
Your AI chart on page 2 only has three names for four fish.

Try harder.
Minnesotan here.
“Panfish” and “Bluegill” are not interchangeable. Maybe it’s just our fishing culture, but everyone I know is pretty set on understanding different names and groups.
Panfish: All smaller sport fish that can fit in a pan. Sunfish, crappies, and perch all qualify. When someone says they’re going out for “panfish”, they’re fishing for literally anything in that native fish category that is good eating.
Bluegill: A sub-species of sunfish in general. Not something we call everything that qualifies as a panfish.
Sunfish: A family of panfish. Bluegill, warmouth, green, redear, long ear, pumpkinseed, etc. are all sunfish.
Why don’t you hear about the other kinds of sunfish? Because bluegill are by FAR the most common species, and the rest make up a minority. Not only that, but most of them can hybridize, so sometimes you don’t even really know what kind of sunfish you have if you aren’t 100% certain on the species. We get some weird warmouth x green x pumpkinseed hybrids here that are almost impossible to accurately identify the exact combination of.
I think the majority of folks are just more comfortable calling a bluegill a bluegill, and everything else a sunfish, because of that.
I hate AI so much but the crappie in bluegill colors took me out 🤣
Every type of fish here is hook and release, or a vitamin for your garden.
Is it ‘brim’ or ‘bream’? Sounds like brim when I hear the locals say it, but that’s the catch all for those sunfish.
Crappie are different from panfish
brim, bream, sunfish, panfish, bluegill… in arkansas they called em perch. really just whatever you’re feelin
in louisiana they look at me crazy when I say crappie. its sac-a-lait round these parts
Warmouth is a fuckin sick name too
Where I live actual bluegill are very common and I only rarely see some other types of panfish.
Just a bunch of land locked tiny guys wishing they were cod or salmon.
I’m in Massachusetts and grew up calling them all pumpkinseeds lol
I like pumpkinseed and green sunfish
it’s nice to catch those
but unfortunately, it’s mostly bluegills
