Yesterday I rescued this Betta from someone who was heavily neglecting him. He’s been living in a 1.5 gallon tank with untreated tap water. No filter, no heater, and weeks in between water changes. She was also over-feeding him a generic fish flake, most of which would rot.

Right now he’s in a larger measuring cup with pre-cycled water I purchased. I have a new tank set up with all the necessities, I’m just waiting for the initial 24 hour period to end before I test the water quality and (hopefully) add him.

Right now I’m trying to determine if he’s going to need medication, and that’s why I’m here. I’ve already spent a fair amount of money rescuing him so I’d like to save what I can, but if he’s going to for sure need it then I’d like to order it ASAP.

His larger fins have about 25% more of the pink color than they did yesterday, so that’s good. I’m worried about his front fins as they’re while, and his fins that hang off of his chest are white and curled. I’m also not sure if the color of his head is normal??

Please.. any advice, identification, or discussion is appreciated. Thank you.

  1. Clean water and he should be fine. He looks in good condition, his ventral fins look slightly curled which could be due to the water quality he was in prior.

He doesn’t look like he needs anything in particular, just keep an eye on your tanks water parameters, as it is a fish in cycle.

Maybe just give him something for parasites (I think paraguard(?) is Betta safe, just double check) and some catappa leaves for the first week or so for anything bacterial or fungal
