Just got our first fly fishing rod! So excited! Do we keep the hard thing above just got our first fly fishing rod. Do we keep the hard white thing above or was that just for shipping and packaging? It didn’t say in the instructions.

Looks like it slides in to the rod tube. You should be able to club a baby seal with your rod tube but that one looks all floppy.
Looks like you pulled the actual rod case out of the sleeve.
As was mentioned, the case should feel tough enough to use in a self defense type situation.
Or, strong enough to use as an incredibly short pole for vaulting.
The goal is to prevent the rod from getting damaged. Fabric just isn’t all that protective.
