this is Gio my first ever betta fish, I got him as a gift from my mom. he is currently in the biggest plastic tub i could find on hand but I WILL BE going to get him a 5-10 gallon tank tomorrow. I know very little about fish and betta fish especially, but i want this little guy to live a long healthy and happy life. any tips you can give me? any things I should buy? anything I can do to bond with him? any response is much appreciated!

To start, fill that thing up with chlorine treated water all the way and give him some breathing room.
I’d recommend looking at the [caresheet](https://www.reddit.com/r/bettafish/s/QvNJTagDpj) posted on this reddit forum
Bigger tanks are easier to take care of. I would say 10gallon, live plants, a couple of snails and basically talking to him, they like to listen!
Glad to hear you’ll be getting him a bigger tank. 5 gallons is okay but 10 is better. Definitely check out the caresheet someone else linked. A summary of the supplies you’ll need: a tank (and a lid if the tank doesn’t come with one), substrate, a filter, a heater, a water testing kit (liquid, not strips), water conditioner, live or silk/fabric plants, a light if you get live plants, and some natural looking decor like driftwood or rocks. Medications like Kanaplex and Maracyn 2 are good to have on hand as well. Look into how to properly cycle a tank, you’ll need to do a fish-in cycle.
