so basically about a week ago i noticed my betta had a little white speck on his mouth as well as a notch missing from his top lip. i figured it was mouth rot since he had no spots anywhere else and i lowered the temp to abt 76 and dosed melafix directly into the tank cuz that’s all i had on hand. well, the melafix did nothing and it progressed so unbelievably fast and now his entire top lip is gone. i moved him to a quarantine tank and put some salt and a little extra stress coat to try and force his little body to start healing while i looked around for meds for him- he’s still eating, he’s super weak but still has energy to move around so i really don’t want to give up on him. i bought methylene blue and dosed some in his tank as like a hail mary but i really don’t know if that’s what i’m supposed to do. im a first time betta owner and this one is seriously giving me a run for my money- i don’t understand how he got mouth rot in the first place; water is testing perfect, i do regular water changes and i haven’t added anything new to the tank in like a month. i’d just like to know what worked for anyone else in this situation? i really love him a lot and i don’t want to kill him because i just didn’t know what to do to save him.

  1. i’ll put this here too

    • Tank size: 10g
    • Heater and filter? (yes/no): yes
    • Tank temperature: 80
    • Parameters in numbers and how you got them: api master test kit: ammonia 0ppm, ph 6.8, 0ppm nitrite, 10-15ppm nitrate
    • How long have you had the tank? How long have you had your fish?: i’ve had the fish for 6 months, tank for 7
    • How often are water changes? How much do you take out per change? What is your process?: 15% water change weekly
    • Any tankmates? If so, please list with how many of each: mystery snail and 4 cherry shrimp
    • What do you feed and how much: omega one betta buffet flakes, around 6-8 big flakes depending
    • Decorations and plants in the tank: planted tank, rocks and driftwood.
    • If you haven’t already posted a picture, please post pics/vids to imgur and paste the link here:

  2. If the speck is fuzzy it could be columnaris if other treatments aren’t working. Kanaplex is a great med to keep in your fish medicine kit. Doing salt baths and keeping your parameters pristine is also a good start
