When I build this aquarium, the guy in the store Said I only needed some gravel for the plants to live in, but I feel like the plants have gotten sad, or just completely destroyed. So do I need a substrate for Them to sit in?

I forgot to say that I am asking this as I am about to build a smaller aqaurium, so I just want to make sure the plants survive

Plants need nutrients which they get from fish poop, liquid fertilizers or aqua soil. The plants are currently lacking nutrients.
Before adding in your sand/gravel, you add in aqua soil first and then cap it with sand/gravel.
If you dont cap your aqua soil, it will leech nutrients (ammonia) to your water column

Depends on plants. Some attach themselves to hardscape. My quarantine tank does not have substrate.
But no substrate will mean less surface area for good bacteria to grow.
Fish Breeder Seen tweedale from aquarium coop does not use substrate.
