For a little background, I got this not-so little guy in October. He was a itty baby then and he's grown into a big boy now (technically named Mr. Chicken). And I've had a betta in the past, but I wasn't fully educated or able to provide proper care for him. His fins were the first sign he was getting ill, likely due to sharp decorations and poor water quality/care.
So when I noticed this 'tearing' on my current guy this weekend after stopping home from a house sit, I definitely felt a bit of panic đ My water parameters are good. I do have a steady but high pH. He gets weekly 25-30% water changes with a mix of bottled spring water with well water to dilute the hardness. The tank has a few anubias plants and soft decorations. The only thing he could maybe tear on is the driftwood and some flat river rock in the corner at a hide (maybe he pinches it against the glass and the rocks?). To add to it, he decided to acquire a small sore/scrape on his head in the thirty minutes I had my back turned to unpack… (I know 'platinums' are prone to blindness) Before noticing that, I was wondering if he was nipping his fins because he's an active guy despite his fins. If you can't tell, I'm definitely attached to this active little guy and want to do right by him.
Tank : 10 gallons
sponge filter with soft current
Temp : 80°f
pH : 8.2 (steady, but should I work to lower it?)
Ammonia : 0 ppm
Nitrites : 0 ppm
Nitrates : 5-10 ppm

If also important, he gets fed usually twice a day, 1-2 BettaMix worms (homie refused the more expensive, healthier food and I’m going to try some frozen treats and snacks soon). And apologies the formatting of the parameters is all messed up đ
Looks fine to me! I’d say it’s new fin growth.
