New Zealand offers more than just trout fishing; it also has some great saltwater flats. The other night, I was on Golden Bay, and the tide was coming in late, the clouds rolled in, and the light rain came down. I had been there before and knew that Kahawai would be coming in chasing bait fish. This one took a crease fly, ran like hell,, and took me into my backing. Most Kahawai are only 30 – 40 centimeters, but this one was 63 cm.

Lovely fish, caught a few off the wharf at Tauranga in the 70s, there on a ship.
I’ve caught a few kahawai on light spinning gear at the Waimakariri mouth. The only kahawai I have caught on a fly was also in Golden Bay, and at only 20cm still put up a crazy fight. They deserve their name.
