Firstly, I want to say thank you to everyone who commented giving their advice and sympathy about my situation. After weighing all the options, I decided to disassemble my tank and give most of my critters to a trusted family friend. I kept a few shrimp and my Java fern to put in my 5 gallon with my baby Corys. I know this probably isn’t the answer that most of you were hoping for, but given my current situation, it works out well on all fronts. I am newly single so paying less for electricity is a plus, hiding the tank could get dicey if it DID end up leaking, and moving is not an option for me at this time. As disappointed and sad as I am about this, I’m so happy that my landlord doesn’t have an issue with my small tank. After my Corys are old enough to be sold to a LFS, I will be converting it into a shrimp tank with my nerite snails and maybe some rasboras. Here is a current picture of my 5 gal (yes I know the fern is knocked over it wouldn’t stay upright).

Any scaping suggestions are welcome! I’m struggling to come up with ideas because of the shape and small size of the tank. Also, I kept all of my old substrate and need to figure out a way to separate it all out which seems like a very tedious ordeal, given that I have gravel, stratum, and sand.

TLDR: I tore down my 20 gallon and gave almost everything to a family friend, but am keeping my 5 gallon because (so far) my landlord is fine with it.

  1. Sorry to hear it, I got kicked out of a rent house for having a pit bull. Sweetest creature.
