So this guy is about 4 years old. Last month his eye swelled up and I assumed it was a case of Pop Eye. I figured his fellow barbs were bullying him so I separated him for a week so he could heal, but it did not get better. I ended up putting him back in the main tank because being away from the school seemed to stress him more.
fast forward 2 weeks later and I notice the swollen eye is forming a head that looks like another eye. Wtf?? Has anyone experienced this before? Is this actually pop eye or something else??

A little more info about him and the tank that might be useful:

  • It's a 75 gal planted community tank with tiger barbs and loaches, cardinal tetras and 100000000 Malaysian trumpet snails
  • He can't seem to see out of the eye, when he sees me approaching the tank he always turns to look at me with his good side and does the same with other fish
-Hes still eating and swimming fine as if nothings wrong

  1. update, after looking closer it looks like it’s a bubble. it’s sort of translucent under his eye, i think he has Gas Bubble Disease. Not sure what to do from here. I see some fishkeeping sites saying to lance it and treat with antibiotics

Maybe try Kanaplex powdered antibiotics in the food. Could be bacterial from an increased susceptibility from stress and bullying. If you don’t have kanaplex a pinch of human doxycycline antibiotics could help if you put a pinch in moistened pellets. Make sure he sees them right away. I cured one of my koi from bacterial septicemia after an attack that way. Good luck!
