Hi- so I’ve been through some betta illnesses and have had several, this one was fine until I noticed she was hanging near the top plants a lot- and yesterday I saw extreme sudden bloat and pine coning. I did epson salt bath in hospital tank, 50% water change, a dose of Kanaplex in hospital tank and then Lifeguard all in one tablet in her 5 gallon tank after removing carbon filter. I have a heater in her tank but only tear water w the test strips, with everything testing in normal range. I know pineconing is usually a sign to euthanize, but I have to try to help her. Any ideas? (The white dots are substrate sand particles I changed the substrate as well).
She looks slightly less bloated today, is still acting mostly normal and swimming…

I hate to tell you this but at this stage it’s pretty much too late, if I was you I’d get order some clove oil to euthanise her and try and make her last days as comfortable as possible, I am sorry you have to go through this my friend

  2. If the fish is still eating, your only hope is to mix the food in kanaplex with Seachem Focus and hope it works. I know you can technically just dose the tank with it but digestion works best I think

I’ve had a fish at this stage before and she was able to recover. Keep trying the epsom baths and kanaplex doses.

  4. Put her down she’s in pain
You tried your best and that’s what matters ☹️
I recommend real plants if you try again

Thanks for any and all comments and advice- can anyone tell me anything I can learn from this? Is it dropsy? What causes it? Is there any other visible issues? I’ve treated swim bladder, Popeye, and other ailments in various bettas, but I’ve never had one pinecone like this

Also- strange question… can a few drops of clove oil help anesthetize the fish to help it be more comfortable while I try to treat her, or is it always and only used to euthanize
