I just got this fish yesterday, I’m aware he has some fin rot issues in his tail, but should I be concerned by the dark appearance of his gills? The gill on the other side does not look black like this. He is in an established, cycled, heated, planted tank with 0 ppm ammonia and around 5 ppm nitrate, but I tested the cup he was in and it was 2 ppm for ammonia. Is this ammonia burn? How should I treat it?

  1. Your fish is beautiful! I’m sorry, I have nothing of substance to provide you and I hope you can nurse this beauty back to proper health! Best of luck to you.

He may have marbling color patteren that will develope over time with good water qauily. Good luck he is beautiful.

  3. I would argue that it will probably resolve itself with some time given he is in a healthy tank with good parameters now. Maybe adding some tannins would help? You could also do an epsom salt soak, those seem to provide relief
