He was quite happy until a started noticing some bloating in his tummy. I though it was because he was eating too much but he still moved around and had appetite.

This morning I saw him very bloated and swimming funny, like he had a damaged spine, not straight but showing some sort of curvature.

Before I left for work I checked parameters and everything seemed fine. I did a partial water change and put a bit of pea paste in case he was constipated.

I came back from work to find him dead and partially eaten by my mistery snail.

Can you tell from the pictures what may have caused this? He lived in a 9 gallon by himself with a mistery snail.

This is so sad. My daughter is 4 and this is her first pet, she doesn't know yet.

I don't want to get another without knowing how to prevent this from happening.

Thank you all for your help

Do you remember if his scales were going outward instead of laying flat? If so, he probably had dropsy unfortunately. His fins also looked very ripped, like possible fin rot – which could be caused by bad water quality. Can you tell the exact water parameters (ammonia, nitrIte, nitrAte)? Best wishes, I’m sorry this happened, loosing a betta is really hard 🙁
