I haven’t done health checks too close recently but I went to top off tanks and immediately noticed my betta floating around his filter. He can barely swim and his body looks…disfigured? I’m ordering clove oil now because I doubt he can be saved, but this is the second betta this has happened to! (In different tanks)
If this is a broken back, what causes it and is there anything I can do to prevent it in the future? I might not get more bettas for the near future:(
P.s. please disregard the dirty water in the pictures, like I said I was doing a water top off and it stirred up some poop

It doesn’t look like a broken back but it is an illness and/or improper husbandry.
Water that is too cold is the first thing that comes to mind. What is the temperature of your tank? Also, what tank mates live with your betta?
Does your fish have any other symptoms? The fish looks underweight, too, which could help us get to the bottom of this.
