I'm going to start off by saying I love my betta fish and would not change him no matter what.
My question is, why does he never flare? I've tried holding my finger up to him, mirrors, and even got a Betta Buddy. He never shows any aggression and doesn't really care about the things around him. He is curious and explores but it doesn't seem like there is an aggressive bone in his body. I have tons of shrimp in his tank and he will look at them but then he will swim away without a care. I know that they are very territorial and aggressive fish, but is it possible that some can just be complete softies?

I’ve had two bettas and neither of them were aggressive. I saw them flare maybe once or twice, ever. Some bettas just have different personalities!
Some are territorial and aggressive, some are giant babies. I’ve mostly had the latter, they never flare at anything, never go after anything, they just exist, seemingly happy to be out of the cup. The one I have now lives with some tetras and neither bother the other. If something were to change and either were to go after the other, I’ll move the betta to his own tank, but if they’re all chilling what’s the problem?
Now my gfs betta likes his tank mates, but doesn’t like me 😂 he flares at me when I walk up the tank (unless I spoil him with a couple food flakes) but never does it to her or the other fish, just me lol
Some bettas are just like that. I’ve had one before who flared maybe only twice in his life. It’s normal, they all have different temperaments.

Honestly you’ve hit the jackpot with such a docile boy. Not everyone can keep even snails in with them….like me 😂 He’s beautiful and your tank looks very nice!
Mine is also incredibly passive. Have never seen him flare and he honestly scares super easily 😂 he has shrimp and snail tank mates and doesn’t give a damn about them either. Just happy to swim around and watch me and my husband!
Just like humans, everyy fish is different
I have one that’s a cranky old turd that will flare at anything and another that won’t flare at a mirror. Just different personalities.
He may also just be old.
Yep absolutely possible. Some are softies, some are not, some are softies up until the day they’re not.
