Been fishing for many years and never tried the wacky rig. Never wanted to try it honestly. Got out for the 1st time on Saturday for about 2 hours and wasn't having much luck. A couple bites but that was it, until I switched the the cheapo Creme lures from Wal-Mart. Wacky rigged it and landed a chunky pre spawn LM. Very next cast I landed it's twin. Exactly the same size as the last, probably 3.5-4 lbs. Went back yesterday for exactly 1 hour before the rain started. Was throwing a Texas rigged creature bait with no luck. Switched to 6" Yum dinger and landed one a little bigger than the day before but still in that good size category. 3 fish, all over 3, all on a wacky rig. I'm on the board starting the new season and can't wait to throw that wacky worm again next time!

If wacky rig has you excited, wait until you wacky rig on a dropshot.

Get to the bottom faster however you can then let it fall on slack line once on bottom. Pop it back to tight line and allow it to fall again.

Lets you keep it where you want it as long as you want it there while still letting you give it action.

This describes my first experience with a wacky rigged worm too… never wanted to try it, it seemed just ridiculous to me.

One day I was being skunked and figured “why the hell not, let’s give it a go”. First cast and I got a nice sized largemouth.

Reminds me of the saying “if it looks stupid but works, it isn’t stupid”.

  3. Nice catch. Now you can even switch to a small circle hook and get even better hookups. VMC also makes a wacky hook with a tiny weight and a weed guard. I like to use that around deeper docks, weed lines and dropping into small pockets in heavy cover. Wacky does get hung up from time to time but easy to just pop a new hook on. Oh also, use some rubber orings or heat shrink on your soft plastics. Each one will last 10 fish instead of 1. I even used black electrical tape in a pinch once and it worked just fine!
