I made a previous post asking what could be causing deaths in my tank, one option was low surface agitation causing a low oxygen environment, so I bought one. I am wondering if this is way too many bubbles, should I find a way to baffle the sponge filter, is this causing more oxygen exchange?

    That’s just how they work. The more agitation, the more oxygen exchange. You could modify the sponge filter to accept a small airstone in the filter chamber. This will create smaller bubbles and less noise,
