Silly question, I love to fish but I’m self taught as an adult and don’t want to offend anyone. My local spot has these long gravel docks like the one pictured, I was sitting towards the back and the other people were about 15-20 feet away up at the end near the tree.
The only reason I ask is because they seemed offended I fished on the same dock even though they’re very large docks and I had my own spot far away from them. I just want to be respectful of people so did I do something wrong??

Casting distance. You can’t cast where they are and they can’t cast where you are.
Really depends on where you are/the local culture.
If the whole stretch there is ok fishing, I’d probably be pretty far away. 30-50′. Enough space that we can both fan cast without intersection.
If it’s a really narrow rock promontory, that might close to 10-15′. There’s no point casting into unproductive water just to be polite.
At the end of the day it’s public water and you aren’t doing anything wrong by being there.
