My brother and I caught this fish off a channel in Apollo Beach, FL about 10 years ago. We could never identify what it was at the time but it was a pain to reel because we were using gear meant to catch much smaller fish. The shoe is a men’s size 11 for comparison. Can anyone help me out and let me know what kind of fish this even is?

  1. That is a black drum (Pogonius cromis). Normally, at this size, they have large vertical black bars that fade with age, but their coloration can be variable. You can also identify them from the small barbels they have on their chin.
