The bubble nests dont means happiness it just mean that the betta are mature

I see you have lots of floating plants, is there enough room between them for him to breathe from the surface? Maybe get one of those feeding squares? I’m just wondering if he doesn’t want to leave the top of the aquarium because he’s having difficulty getting air from the surface

Feed him some frozen blood worms and you’ll get a bubble nest lol but in general that’s not a good sign of “happiness”, more accurately horniness. You could try to train him or give him some obstacles to play with like a floating log or suction cup toys!

What are the water parameters and is there an air stone or bubble filter in the tank? From my experience, typically when fish rest at the top of the tank its due to low water quality or low levels of dissolved oxygen. Even if he was bored, there’s enough plants for him to swim through and rest on. It wouldn’t make sense for him to never explore or swim around unless something is wrong. Like the others have said, bubble nests are a sign of sexual maturity rather than happiness. They’ll even make bubble nests in those tiny breeder boxes (i call them timeout boxes). A true sign of happiness would be: active swimming and interest in the environment, vibrant coloration, healing fins or lack of damage, and notable excitement if you approach the tank.
