Hi All
My daughter was gifted a Betta and tank for her birthday. We setup the tank a week before getting the fish and did all the water conditioning and took a sample of the water for testing before picking out a Betta.
It is a 9L tank which included a hang on filter, Glass Heater, betta Water Conditioner, Carbon Cartridge and Bio Starter
It's been a few days now and I've been doing a bit of research and reading through this subreddit and I'm a little worried about our beautiful fishy babe.
He seems to only stay at the top as shown on the photos. Sometimes he floats to his side.
He will swim to the front of the tank when he spots someone, especially myself.
I'm not sure if maybe we are overfeeding him? We've been giving him 2 pellets at morning and at night. He swims to us before we feed him which we've taken as a sign of him being hungry.
I got the fresh plants and hammock for him today after reading people having a bit of success with these and hoping it may settle him into the tank more as it's quite larger to the mason glass he was in! I was looking for a floating log but no where near me seems to sell them.
I also got a thermometer to check the heat as I believe the heater given to her is a automatic heater? And I was told 25 degrees woudl be ideal. The water is sitting just under 20 degrees.
Would love any feedback or advice anyone has on if it's just him settling in or are we overfeeding him or is there something else wrong?
Thank you 🙂

I’m a newbie but the temp should be from 24-27! He’s definitely cold, but you can get cheap heaters! I paid mine like 15€ i think. Anything under is cold for bettas. I don’t know about the filter, but if it’s not making too much water movement I suppose it’s fine, but a sponge or a gentle submerged filter would be more gentle! The minimum’s usually 20/5Gal liters for a betta
I think he’d just resting on the plants.
Also I’d recommend doing very frequent water changes! One week isn’t enough to cycle, but doing daily water changes (at least 30-40%) should stop any ammonia buildup!
