No room for oxygen exchange I fear. And the surface area to water volume is totally wack. Plus the fish will probably be confused by the random wall.

This is literally my dream lol but I wanted a whole room to be an aquarium with space in the middle for me to walk in and barricade myself

I love it and would totally assist in building it.

Practical engineer in me says that the span – the middle part – is going to be tough to get right, as it’s where the most stress should be concentrated. So the glass would have to be thick enough to compensate there (but really the entire top, since it’s unlikely to be simpler to change glass thicknesses in a single solid piece).

You would also probably end up with the same problems folks have when they build those larger “coffee table”-type tanks – they want the lid to be sealed, but that adds all sorts of humidity-control problems.

But I still like the idea!

  4. Having a tank on the floor could potentially mean TONS of work if you ever want to drain the water completely.

you’d definitely need some kind of support brace under the middle and definitely make it out of acrylic. not sure where you would hide filtration? you’d probably want two canisters one on each side. Some canisters can also be used to drain water for water changes which might help.

I had a buddy do this in college and the maintenance was unreal. After like 2 months he gave up on it.

Getting that custom made out of acrylic could bankrupt Bill Gates, cleaning it is going to be actual hell, could stress the fish out, there are probably more. That said I’ve had crazy ideas like this too lol

  8. I have aquariums throughout my office. Easier than having a desk-quarium and I still get to enjoy watching my fish and shrimp while I work. I’d be worried about having anything glass at ground level since I’m kinda clumsy. Also, I love the art, thanks for making me laugh!

I think realistically, having that bridge doesn’t make much sense because of how little space you have between your lap and your ideal work surface height , unless you have the weirdly elongated torso of that stick figure too.

I think either you should make it a standing desk where the entire bottom is a solid tank, or the u shaped cutout like is shown in the example others have posted. The bridge in the main work area makes little sense from a functional point of view because you won’t be looking through it much anyway, since you’ll have a keyboard or papers obstructing the view most likely.

That’s for why I think this specific design isn’t ideal. Not that you shouldn’t make an aquarium desk.

I mean, idk if I’d want a glass encased around my legs. One accidental kick too hard, and you’ve got cut legs, dead fish, and water damage.

Prob be better to just have one rectangular giant tank and put a wood plank overtop, leaving the sides open for plants/ pumps/ equipment

I would not feel comfortable using an aquarium as a desk. Click clacking away at a keyboard and moving around in general would stress me out, as i imagine it would stress the fish out quite a bit.

Looks cool for a day, not an actually great way to look at your tank and relax. Especially if your desk is covered in stressful work. Just my two cents.

  14. it would smell, be loud, you’re going to get anything on your desk wet or ruined by humidity, and you’ll have to move all your stuff to clean it. I could not actually do work on a desk like that but idk.
