Found this while poking around in some of my late grandfather’s stuff. Posting on this sub because he was an avid outdoorsman and it was kept with his hunting knife. Hand carved/painted with Japan stamped on blade. Carved notches on sheathe. Pencil for scale. Any idea if this is actually used for something or is just a mini katana he picked up while traveling? Thanks in advance!

I got one of these from my grandfather about 30 years ago. He was an outdoorsman as well. I’m not sure on the make but it’s probably made in the 80’s or earlier.

  2. Its a fishing filet knife. Meant to easily be carried in a tackle box. The thin, small blade can be sharpened so it can get around bones. Some of these will float when the blade is stored and both pieces are together.

  3. That’s a tourist trinket, sold as a letter opener. I have one nearly identical around here somewhere, bought it for something like $20USD my last trip to Japan(2009ish). Looks like your grandpa tried to sharpen it on a bench grinder and then threw it in his tackle box as a makeshift mini filet knife.

I HAVE THIS SAME THING, I use it as a letter opener so that’s what I assume it is

My guess is a well made, Japanese steel, letter opener that was converted into a bait knife for processing small fish for larger bait

Seems too small to be a filet knife, but it’s cool it looks like a tiny katana
