I got this extreme stik from cabellas the other day and I’ve been getting this just about every time I cast.
I’m new to spinning reels but I don’t think it’s a skill issue. I switched over to my wife’s big water ugly stik and had 0 issues, also had 0 issues with a rental pole when I went pier fishing. I’m definitely not getting the perfect cast or anything and still getting used to this type of reel, but again, despite that I’m not getting tangled like this on other setups.
What gives? I had them spool it for me w/ 12lb mono which is what was recommended. Am I doing something wrong? Was it spooled poorly? Should I return it and go with something else?

It’s line memory. From being spooled in a certain direction for so long on the shelf. From what I know, soaking it in hot, not boiling, water can help release the memory. Also, making sure to spool it in the opposite direction from which it was spooled on that plastic reel in the box.
For one it looks like they did not spool enough line. (Unless you pulled the majority out.).
If it has more line that is actually off the reel at this point follow my instructions below.
If not. Buy new line (follow the reel manufacturer spec for line amount to size of line) and follow the tension and heating steps.
So what I would do is get a can or soda bottle and tie the end of your line to it. Leave the bale open and wind most of the line into the bottle tile you clear the rats nest. Untangle it all (if possible) and then wind it back on adding some pressure as you go. When the line is all back in clip the end of the line into the line holder of the barrel. Take the barrel off. (The drag on top unscrews) Take just the barrel with the line on it and dunk it for a 5 seconds into some boiling water. Let it drain and cool and this should solve your issue.
The problem is most likely not you. It’s most likely that it was not under enough tension when they spooled it and has a memory from Sitting on the manufacturer spool.
Rewinding it and heating it with hot water will reset the memory to your reel. I’ve done this for most of my life and I’ve never had an issue with mono or braided lines.
When you cast, are you flipping the bail back into place right after your hook hits the water?
Line memory, made worse by being way under-spooled. If they spooled it for you like this in store, you should be pretty annoyed. There should be much more line on it. I would go with 10-15lb braid and spool it up properly, until about 1/8” from the beveled edge of the spool.
