My first thought is soap- somehow some way an amount of soap got into your water while you were changing it/cleaning the rocks.
First things first, ***get your betta out of that water NOW. Put him into whatever receptacle you have available with new dechlorinated water.*** I’d also put a bubbler into whatever you put your fish in (depending on the size of whatever he’s in) just to make sure the water is good and oxygenated.
It doesn’t take much soap at all for bubbles to form. I’d give your water changing bucket a thorough rinse- like aggressive rinse ASAP, and then I’d do a water change ASAP.
If you have a carbon filter, it will help to remove any trace amounts of soap left in the water. If you don’t, I’d run out and grab the appropriate filter media for that as soon as you finish another water change. If you use any spray cleaners or anything like that, that also might be what has gotten into your water. Either way, I’d recommend the same thing.
May as well save a bit of the water before your water change, do the water change, get the carbon filter media, and then test the original water and see if you can get an idea of what’s going on that way- I only say to do this last because whatever is in your tank could be deadly to your fish.
In the future, it’s unnecessary to clean hardscape. Even if there is some algae on it, algae isn’t inherently bad for fish, the only reason people remove it is for aesthetic reasons. You can rinse off your hardscape in old tank water (when you’re doing a water change, use the water that you removed from the tank to rinse your hardscape). This way, you won’t remove any benificial bacteria, and there will be no way of contaminates getting in.
Best of luck OP. If you can/have time, please update, as I’m curious about what issue this could be and how it goes fixing it. Wishing you and your little fish the best!
How and why did you clean the decor and rocks?
You’re gonna need to do a massive water change ASAP, that looks like soap/deadly chemicals for a betta.
Never use these types of products when cleaning anything that goes into an aquarium.
When I was using medicine for fish, it would bubble and foam quite the same way. Something about the way medicine interacts with organics and binds to them, I believe, when bubbles/agitation forms. Some might still be present with 60% water change. Once you perform more, it should dilute and eventually cease.
I agree with the other comment, these are probably soap bubbles. If your tank was much more seasoned, not recently cleaned, and had less surface agitation, I ~might~ say it’s biofilm, but these are lots of bubbles and quite large. In the future, make sure your hands are incredibly well rinsed when you’re handling anything from the fish tank.
If this was from cleaning the rocks as you mentioned, in the future a light scrub with a brand new toothbrush or an aquarium sponge in some old tank water during your water change is enough. Unless you have something crazy going on in your tank, I honestly wouldn’t worry about cleaning them at all.
For now, water change and monitor the fish closely. Best of luck!
