For those of you who do not know bubblenests is created for when a male is wanting to spawn , these nests in the pictures are filled with eggs that were from spawning of a male and female wild betta Smaragdina in their natural habitat.

These were pictures from my teams expedition to their habitat this year which was in north eastern Thailand.

Bettas natural instinct during spawning is to locate a suitable area for protection from other fish or predators which ensure a safe environment for their fry to hatch whilst the male guards the nest for up to a week.

Nests are made mostly in densely packed areas with either leaves or foliage and some areas have been found to be no more than a few centimeters of depth and surprising they are able to spawn and raise their young in these areas. Some are even found in footprints of humans or even animals and after hatching the male will leap into the main pool of water and when the water level rises the fry will follow.

Hopefully you enjoyed seeing these habitat pictures from me, I got a bunch to upload in the near future because I’ve not posted in over a year or two so I have a ton of photos and adventures that I went on that have not been shared yet!

  1. Wow, it’s awesome to see bubblenests in the wild!
Are B. Smaragdina your favorites? your focus? or both?
I actually only have ever had imbellis-hybrids, never true pure wild-types, but Smaragdina look so awesome that i’ve been contemplating keeping the species – i have not done enough research yet to tell if that’s a good idea, tbh.
I like my tanks to be as natural to the fish as possible it makes them behave in ways they’re designed to, so it’d take a good while to properly establish a tank, plants and all to properly accommodate them…

I’d say this is some prime content, i greatly enjoy habitat pictures like that 😀
